Removing window film is probably the last thought to enter your mind when you’re having film installed. Over time, however, the adhesive bond holding the film in place will start to break down. As it begins to show signs of wear, you should realize that it won’t be long until the adhesive no longer holds, and you will need to come up with an effective way to remove it. Low-E glass or sun-blocking window film: Which stops the heat better?

When the summer sun penetrates windows, the temperature in your home rises — along with your cooling bill. You could install low-E (low-emissivity) glass or apply a reflective window film to make your home cooler.
Most replacement windows professionals recommend low-E glass windows, especially if installing new windows is high on your to-do list. You get the best efficiency by replacing the entire window because you also replace the frame’s weatherstrip and seal, says John Nelson, owner of Austin Retrofit, a window replacement company in Austin, Texas.

Window film helps control room temperatures
Window film also blocks heat effectively and can be used to help your home retain heat in the winter, says Kevin Koval of Solaris in Carmel, Indiana. He says its a good solution to your cooling and heating problems if your windows are structurally sound and if you only need to apply film to a few windows.
To ensure your windows will match, you'd have to replace all the windows. Whereas you can apply window film to the windows and doors in the rooms you want to be more energy efficient, without worrying that your window's no longer match.
The importance of energy efficient windows
When considering energy-efficient windows for your home, look for two key performance indicators: the U-factor and the solar heat gain co-efficient. The U-factor indicates a window's overall insulating value, while the solar heat gain co-efficient measures how well a window deflects incoming solar heat. An efficient window should be rated at 0.30 or below in both measurements to get the most energy efficient window.
Low-E coatings were developed to minimize the amount of ultraviolet and infrared light that passes through glass without compromising the amount of visible light that's transmitted. Low-E glass includes a microscopic, transparent coating that reflects infrared energy, or heat.

Window replacement costs on average $175 to $700 per window. Common high-end windows types can cost between $800 to $1,200. Installation cost can depend on several factors.
Low-E argon gas windows
Mike Van Gundy, owner of Empire Windows in Delaware, Ohio, says the low-E coated glass products that use an argon gas filling in between the glass offer the best option for blocking heat.
Because low-E blocks sun, it may leave some rooms cooler than you want in the winter. As a result, you should ask your window installer how low-E glass will affect the room's temperature during the winter.
For hotter climates, Mike Gilkey, owner of Gilkey Window Company in Cincinnati, suggests installing window glass with three low-emissivity coatings already built in. With LoE3, the triple stack coating goes on the exterior plate of the inside surface of the glass, so it's protected from the elements, which prevents it from tarnishing.
Expect to pay at least $300 for an energy efficient window, with costs as high as $1,000. Angie's List members report paying $729 on average per window.
Research the energy efficient features you want in a window before hiring a window replacement professional. Those features, along with the size, style and cosmetic appeal, affect the final price of the window. Although pricey, experts say the investment in energy efficient windows will pay for itself over time.
Does window tint work?
If you don't want new windows, sun-blocking window film or window tint is a good alternative. Compared to low-E windows, the overall cost of installing tinted film on clear glass is less expensive and newer version of window film can also help your home retain heat in the winter.
David Parke, a sales manager at Custom Sun Control in Marietta, Georgia, says most solar reflective films start at about $6 to $14 per square foot. 'For the money, you won't find a window that will give you the same performance as solar film,' he says.

However, installing reflective film insulation won't address an inefficient window frame, which could be the reason for air leakage in the house.
You can apply aftermarket films to most windows, but doing may void the glass manufacturing company's warranty if the manufacturer believes it will affect how their product performs. Before applying window film to your windows, check the warranty for the window manufacturer and film manufacturer to see what window repair and replacement protections each offers.
